The Country Music Hall of Fame's Bakersfield Sound Exhibit

Scott was a consultant and contributor to the Country Music Hall of Fame's new exhibit, "The Bakersfield Sound: Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, and California Country," which will run at the Nashville museum through the end of 2013.

Scott's essay, "Dim Lights, Thick Smoke, and Loud, Loud Music: The Story of the Bakersfield Sound," appears in the companion book to the exhibit. Click the "buy" link on this site to get your own copy for $19.95.

On Saturday, March 24th Scott moderated a panel discussion at the Hall of Fame featuring Bakersfield Sound pioneers Red Simpson, Dallas Frazier, Rose Lee Maphis, Don Maddox, and Buddy Mize. Additionally, he participated on a writers' panel on Friday, March 23rd. The Hall of Fame will soon post streaming video on their website.

Bear Family Records' Red Simpson Box Set

On March 6th, Bear Family Records released a 5-disc box set chronicling the career of Bakersfield Sound pioneer Red Simpson. Scott produced the set and wrote the liner notes for the 108-page hardcover book. Check out the preview below and then click the "buy" link to order a copy of your own:

Leiber & Stoller Music

4th and State recently wrapped up a project for Leiber and Stoller Music organizing and archiving their files, tapes, and various treasures collected during a 60 year partnership. For those who don't know the team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, they wrote classic songs such as "Hound Dog," "Kansas City," "Jailhouse Rock," "Stand By Me," "Yakety Yak," "Charlie Brown," "On Broadway," "Love Potion #9," "Young Blood," "Is That All There Is?," and many more that led to their induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. As businessmen, Leiber and Stoller published hits including "Good Rockin' Tonight," "Fever," "Chantilly Lace," "The Twist," "Da Doo Ron Ron," "Then He Kissed Me," "Be My Baby," Do Wah Diddy Diddy," "Good Lovin'," "Chapel of Love," "Under the Boardwalk," "Summer in the City," and "Happy Together."

Current CD Box Set Projects

Scott is writing the hardcover books that will accompany two upcoming Bear Family Records box sets. One will gather Country Music Hall of Famer Faron Young's Mercury Recordings from 1962-1968, and the other will chronicle the post-Capitol recordings of Country Music Hall of Fame member and influential western swing and honky tonk pioneer Hank Thompson.

Scott's Song on the Grand Ole Opry

The Derailers performed Scott's song "Every Time It Rains" during their August 5th performance on Nashville's legendary Grand Ole Opry national radio and television broadcast. The Philadelphia Enquirer says "Every Time It Rains", which appears on the band's "Soldiers of Love" CD, "exudes cool, pop-tinged atmospherics" and No Depression magazine calls it a "gorgeous weeper."

Scott's Song on Americana Compilation CD

The Nashville-based Music Row Democrats has put together a compilation album featuring twenty artists, including The Mavericks, Nanci Griffith, Darrell Scott, Todd Snider, Beth Nielsen Chapman, Shawn Camp, James McMurtry, Tim O'Brien, Bobby Braddock, and Norman & Nancy Blake. Scott is featured on the collection performing "Two Paper Town," a song he co-wrote with Steve Seskin. Critic Jay Orr commented, "Bomar hooked me with the tuneful and incisive 'Two Paper Town,' about corporate America's continued narrowing of the dialogue of everyday life."

More Derailers Action

In addition to "Every Time It Rains," The Derailers have recorded Scott's song "Guaranteed to Satisfy." It appears on their Palo Duro Records album of the same name and also shows up on Varese Sarabande Records' release of "The Derailers Live! From Texas."
